Antony Blinken: A Controversial Legacy

Antony Blinken, former Secretary of State under the Biden administration, leaves behind a legacy marked by controversy. His tenure faced criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, with accusations of misleading the public on the Afghanistan withdrawal, involvement in suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story, complicity in the Gaza conflict and in a final act of defiance, ordering the forced removal of journalists from a State Department briefing—an unprecedented end to his time in office.
Hunter Biden and Media Suppression
Blinken has been accused of playing a key role in suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story, which revealed emails alleging corruption involving then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. According to an Interim Report by the House Intelligence Committee. Blinken was allegedly involved in framing the laptop story as “Russian disinformation.” Blinken and other officials defended their response, claiming that it was based on intelligence assessments that indicated Russian disinformation at the time. The report outlined how this narrative was pushed despite growing concerns about the authenticity of the laptop’s contents. Critics argue that these actions were intended to protect Joe Biden from political damage during the election cycle. However, some political analysts argue that these actions were taken in good faith, to prevent foreign interference during a critical election period.
suggest Blinken knowingly misled the American public by framing the story as “Russian disinformation.” This was later investigated by the House Intelligence Committee. Critics argue that his actions were a deliberate attempt to influence the 2020 election and shield Biden from scrutiny.
Afghanistan Withdrawal and Congressional Contempt
The withdrawal from Afghanistan remained a point of intense debate. While the execution of the plan was chaotic, Blinken has argued that the U.S. needed to leave after nearly two decades of military involvement. Some foreign policy experts have noted that, despite the chaotic exit, the decision to withdraw was in line with a broader strategy to no longer have prolonged military engagements in the region.
In September 2024, the Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee recommended holding Blinken in contempt of Congress over his testimony regarding the withdrawal. Marked by the deaths of 13 American service members and the abandonment of Afghan allies, drew bipartisan criticism. As of this writing, a vote has not been held on whether to refer the matter to the Justice Department for prosecution.
Gaza
In April 2024, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department’s refugee bureau determined that Israel was deliberately blocking food and medical aid from reaching Gaza. Despite this, Blinken testified before Congress in May, claiming, “We do not currently assess that the Israeli government is prohibiting or otherwise restricting the transport or delivery of U.S. humanitarian assistance.”
Internal reports from the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration contradicted Blinken’s statements, concluding that Israel was, in fact, obstructing humanitarian aid. The bureau even recommended freezing nearly $830 million in weapons shipments to Israel under the Foreign Assistance Act—a recommendation that was ignored by Blinken and the Biden administration.
Despite mounting evidence and international condemnation, Blinken and the administration refused to impose meaningful sanctions or restrict arms transfers to Israel. According to the United Nations Genocide Convention (1948), Israel’s actions met the criteria for genocide, yet the U.S. government continued its support, raising serious ethical and legal concerns.
Blinken’s tenure ended on a controversial note when he had journalists forcibly removed from his final press conference after they questioned him about Gaza. Rather than addressing the concerns, he spent his last moments in office justifying U.S. support for Israel, stating that diplomatic pressure was kept “mostly private” to avoid giving Hamas a strategic advantage.
While critics of Blinken’s stance emphasize the need for a shift in U.S. foreign policy toward a more even-handed approach, others argue that his actions were aligned with longstanding U.S. support for Israel’s security needs in the region.
Public Outrage and Protest: ‘Kibbutz Blinken’
For six months, activists set up an encampment outside Blinken’s Virginia home, calling it “Kibbutz Blinken.” The protest, led by Palestinian-Syrian-American activist Hazami Barmada, sought to hold Blinken accountable for his role in the Gaza crisis.
“I wanted to know—Blinken, if we brought the settlement to you, are you completely OK with it?” Barmada told The National.
She added, “American politicians create policies that wreak havoc, then simply return to their personal lives, absolved of consequences. We wanted to make this personal.”

The People’s Verdict: A Legacy Defined by Israel
When asked on social media how they viewed Blinken’s legacy, users voiced a common theme— they felt he had an unwavering loyalty to Israel over the interests of the United States.
- Jan: “He sold out his dream of being a musician to sell out the world. A coward, failure, murderer, and fraud.”
- ScriptedSoulShannon: “Blinken is integral to the genocide in Palestine. He was born into it. He serves Israel’s interests, not America’s. A war criminal.”
- Jarnsy: “Traitor Blinken chose death and apathy. He ignored facts, pushed lies, and protected the empire while the oppressed suffered.”
- RockOn_AncientQueen: “His legacy is arrogance, genocide, and indifference. He will be remembered as the man who justified the slaughter of an entire generation.”
- MJ Grimm 7: “Blinken’s legacy will be that he always put Israel first. Bloody Blinken.”
- TallulahB: “His legacy is profiteering from arms dealing, destroying America’s reputation, and enabling a 21st-century live-streamed Holocaust.”
Critics argue that Blinken’s actions ultimately undermined his credibility and contributed to the failures in U.S. foreign policy during his tenure.
Blinken himself doesn’t see it that way. Speaking with The New York Times about Gaza he said, “Everyone has to look at the facts and draw their own conclusions from those facts. I think, as well, in the wake of horrific suffering there’s also a light one can see. That offers the prospect of a much different and much better future. We’ve done an extraordinary amount of work to build a foundation for that.”
Despite the controversies, Blinken’s tenure also saw notable successes in areas like U.S.-Europe relations and the management of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where he worked closely with NATO allies to provide coordinated support for Ukraine.
What’s Next
Blinken has inked a book deal about his time serving as Secretary of State. Promising to offer a “rare glimpse” into the “challenging and often controversial” responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the war in Gaza and other crises that broke out during his four years at the helm of the State Department under President Joe Biden. It is important to realize Blinken didn’t just fail in Gaza. He failed to secure a lasting ceasefire for the Armenians too, but no one is talking about it.
The U.S., under Antony “Bloody” Blinken, brokered a temporary ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh in October 2022, claiming they were looking for a “lasting peace”, but in September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched a one-day military offensive, quickly seizing the region and forcing over 100,000 ethnic Armenians to fleeāwidely seen as ethnic cleansing.
Despite U.S. “diplomatic efforts”, no strong action was taken to deter Azerbaijan, and the ceasefire ultimately failed.
Nagorno-Karabakh now ceases to exist as an Armenian entity.
Everything Blinken got involved for threatened populations based on an ethnic cleansing ideology? They ultimately ended in ruins.
