It’s the Genocide, Stupid!

Borrowing from Bill Clinton’s iconic campaign slogan, “It’s the economy, stupid!” a new narrative emerges in response to a disingenuous question that some pro-Israel advocates and Zionist lobbyists have raised: “Why has global sentiment shifted against Israel?” The question itself is a calculated diversion, ignoring the glaringly obvious answer that lies at the heart of this global outcry—the genocide in Gaza.

The Truth Behind the Question

For decades, Israel maintained a robust image in the international community, bolstered by strong lobbying efforts, a narrative rooted in historical victimhood, and strategic alliances with Western powers. However, the escalation of violence in Gaza—characterized by indiscriminate bombings, mass civilian casualties, and the decimation of vital infrastructure—has shattered this narrative. Graphic evidence of these atrocities, shared widely across social media platforms, has laid bare the human cost of occupation and aggression.

The disingenuous question, “Why the backlash?” is not meant to find an answer; rather, it seeks to distract from the horrors unfolding in Gaza. The global pushback against Israel is not a mystery, nor is it rooted in anti-Semitism, as is often claimed. It is the direct result of a world witnessing, in real time, the consequences of policies that amount to ethnic cleansing and genocide according to the United Nations own definition of genocide.

Global Response: Empathy for the Victims

The internet has amplified the voices of the oppressed, bypassing traditional media filters that often skew narratives in favor of Israel. Videos of destroyed homes, grieving parents, and children buried in rubble have galvanized global empathy for Palestinians. Protests in cities around the world—London, New York, Paris, Johannesburg, and beyond—are evidence of an undeniable shift in public opinion. Ordinary people are no longer willing to accept the sanitized versions of events propagated by governments and mainstream media.

Critically, this shift transcends traditional political and cultural boundaries. From progressive activists to faith-based communities and even traditionally conservative groups, a unifying thread of humanity has emerged in defense of Gaza’s victims.

The Failure of Propaganda

Attempts to counter this shift with propaganda have largely fallen flat. AI-generated personas and disinformation campaigns aimed at painting the perpetrators as victims have been exposed and ridiculed. Efforts to label criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic have lost much of their potency, as the distinction between legitimate criticism of state policies and hate speech has become clearer to the global audience.

Even longstanding allies of Israel have found themselves on the defensive. Calls for ceasefires, accountability, and investigations into war crimes have come from unexpected quarters, signaling a growing impatience with Israel’s defiance of international norms.

Genocide is Unpopular—Always

The simple truth is that genocide is, and always has been, deeply unpopular. No amount of lobbying, media manipulation, or social media trickery can change this fundamental reality. The question is not why Israel has lost favor, but why it continues to double down on actions that alienate the world and undermine its own long-term security and legitimacy.

Even though the United States has signed the UN’s genocide convention of 1948, the US continues to avoid using terms like genocide or ethnic cleansing to describe what is happening in Gaza because they have political interests with Israel.

By asking “Why the backlash?” supporters of these policies are attempting to obscure the obvious. But as more people speak out, the answer remains clear: It’s the genocide, stupid.

A Moment of Reckoning

This global shift represents a pivotal moment, not just for Palestinians but for the international community as a whole. It is a test of humanity’s ability to stand against injustice, even when perpetrated by powerful actors. The growing solidarity with Gaza’s victims is a sign that the world is waking up to the realities on the ground and rejecting the false narratives that have dominated for too long.

It’s time to stop asking misleading questions and start demanding accountability.
