President Heinz Fischer Becomes First Austrian Leader to Condemn Gaza War on Humanitarian Grounds

Former Austrian President Heinz Fischer has called on Austria’s government to clearly articulate its stance on Israel’s military actions in Gaza, warning that silence in the face of possible war crimes is not an option for a democratic state committed to human rights.

In an interview with the Austrian Press Agency (APA), Fischer expressed “outrage” over the conduct of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s war cabinet, condemning the humanitarian toll exacted on civilians in the Gaza Strip. “One cannot remain silent when actions bear the hallmarks of war crimes,” he asserted, emphasizing the ethical duty of the Austrian state to respond.

Fischer’s remarks come amid mounting international concern over Israel’s prolonged military campaign in Gaza, which has left thousands dead and displaced many more. Drawing a stark comparison to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Fischer stated: “Neither Russia nor Israel has the right to cross borders and force populations to flee. International law must apply universally.”

The former president warned that the ongoing conflict, and the perception of uncritical Western support for Israel, risk fueling antisemitism rather than combating it. “We must oppose antisemitism vigorously, but supporting humanitarian violations under the pretext of solidarity does the opposite,” Fischer said.

While acknowledging the sensitivity of Austria’s relationship with Israel and his personal ties to the country, Fischer was unequivocal: “What we are witnessing cannot be justified—this cannot go unchallenged.”

Fischer was more reserved on whether Austria should formally recognize a Palestinian state, noting the complex diplomatic ramifications. However, his overall message was clear: Austria must not abandon its moral compass in global affairs.
