Russian Drone Attack Devastates Zaporizhzhia

In the early hours of May 6, 2025, the city of Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine was plunged into chaos as Russian forces launched a barrage of Shahed-type drones against residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure. According to the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, at least 13 drones struck civilian areas, inflicting severe damage on residential districts and energy facilities.

Eyewitness reports, interviews, and photographic evidence provided to Truthlytics by CIDEIPS (Ukrainian Center for International Communications) reveal the aftermath. Fifteen apartment buildings and over 45 private homes were partially or completely destroyed across three districts of Zaporizhzhia. The drone strikes also targeted power infrastructure, exacerbating existing energy shortages and leaving thousands without electricity.

“I heard the buzzing first—like a lawnmower, but it was coming from the sky. Then everything shook. My windows exploded. My son was screaming. We had nowhere to run.”
Olena K., 37, a resident of the Shevchenkivskyi district, speaking to CIDEIPS investigators hours after her apartment building was hit.

“I heard shooting. I thought: I need to go to the house, because the child is there. I went out to see. I hear something flying above me. It was very, very, very close. But I didn’t think that it would fly to me, to be honest. Well, it flew and fell to Dmytro. Fire here. I flew into the house. Here we have everything in the dust. I didn’t even see them. Mom was opening the door, it was jammed. Neighbor boys came running. They took buckets and started extinguishing Dmytro’s house.”

Local emergency services responded to reports of four civilians injured, including a young mother whose home was struck while she and her children were inside. First responders worked through the night to extinguish fires and evacuate trapped residents as drone debris littered the streets. Artem Dutov, a rescuer from the communal emergency service “Cobra,” described the scene as “utter devastation,” stating:

“Now, as you can see, we are liquidating the consequences of the arrival of the ‘Shaheds.’ Next, we help the owners find valuable things. After liquidation of the consequences, there will be complete cleaning, equipment will be brought, and all garbage will be removed for liquidation.”

The use of Shahed-type drones—loitering munitions known for their precision and destructive payloads—represents a continued escalation in Russia’s ongoing campaign against Ukrainian cities. The attacks align with Moscow’s broader strategy of targeting civilian infrastructure, a pattern that human rights groups have decried as potential war crimes.

Zaporizhzhia, a strategic industrial hub and gateway to the contested regions of southern Ukraine, has been under near-constant assault since the start of the conflict. Civilian casualties and infrastructure damage have mounted with each wave of strikes, as local authorities struggle to keep essential services operational.

Inna Moshchenko, head of the humanitarian center “Proliska,” described the desperate need for reconstruction materials:
“We provide building materials at this location. We also provide building sets that include OSB boards, clear sheeting, tarpaulin, tape, foam for framing windows, nails for people to close roofs, windows, outbuildings. Currently, 13 households that have received assistance have already been registered at this location.”

Despite international condemnation, Russian forces continue to deploy drones and missiles against civilian populations, intensifying a conflict that has already displaced millions and strained global humanitarian resources.

Photos and videos provided by CIDEIPS document the aftermath of the May 6th attack, reveal scenes reminiscent of wartime devastation: burnt-out shells of apartment buildings, residents weeping over destroyed homes, and blackened debris scattered across the streets. The Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration is urging foreign media to amplify these images and testimonies, hoping to draw global attention to the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in the region.

As international observers call for accountability, the people of Zaporizhzhia are left to pick up the pieces of lives shattered by war, even as the threat of further drone attacks looms. International monitoring bodies must investigate these attacks, document the evidence, and hold perpetrators accountable for targeting civilians and critical infrastructure. The world cannot afford to look away as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
