An Israeli artillery strike on the Nuseirat Camp in the central Gaza Strip has claimed the lives of three people including Khaled Nabhan on December 16, 2024. Nabhan became known for the phrase “the soul of my soul” after speaking about the death of his granddaughter, Reem Nabhan.

Reem

Reem Nabhan was three-years-old in November 2023 when she was killed along with her five-year-old brother, Tarek in an Israeli airstrike near the home they shared with their mother and grandparents. Her grandfather’s grief was broadcast around the world showing his tearful goodbye to her as he kissed her eyes and stroked her hair calling her the “soul of my soul”. In an interview with CNN shortly after the attack that took their lives, Nabhan said “I was wishing, hoping that they were only sleeping,” he said. “But they weren’t sleeping, they are gone.”

He began wearing Tarek’s football medal as a necklace and carrying Reem’s earring as a brooch on his thobe. Making sure his beloved grandchildren remained close to him until his own untimely death.

Khaled

After his grandchildren died, Khaled Nabhan became a symbol of love and resistance. The strength he displayed in the face of his own personal tragedy, lead him to go viral and amass 1 million followers on Instagram. He endeared many with his love for cats and feeding the strays around Gaza. He dedicated his time to serving his community. Filmed distributing aid including bringing hot coffee for bedridden elderly, medicine to the disabled, hats, gloves and toys to the children without. Often, laughing, playing and flying kites with them.

In a video posted by Documenting Oppression Against Muslims (DOAM) Nabhan is seen trying to comfort a mother who lost her 17-year-old son to Israeli bombing telling her, “I’ve lost the two dearest to my heart, Reem and Tarek, the souls of my soul. By Allah, they’re all as precious as honey and pure gold.”

On social media, an outpouring of grief over the loss of a man dedicated to being a helper. His followers are finding comfort in his legacy of endurance, strength and love. Many pledging to never forget a man sometimes referred to as the “soul of the Palestinian struggle.”

His nephew, Fadel Nabhan, told Truthlytics, “He has been a candle of hope to many of our people though we have been murdered, he continued to give us all hope. We have lost everything but he never gave up on us. He motivated everyone to hold on to hope and spread forgiveness not hate on those who don’t know what they’re doing. He always spread togetherness.”

Much like his uncle, Fadel Nabhan has a deep love for animals. He runs a shelter in Gaza trying to help as many stray animals as he can. If you would like to help support his mission, his fundraiser may be found here.

Gaza

Over a year of Israeli bombardments has resulted in 902 Palestinian families being completely wiped out and removed from the Civil Registry according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. A ceasefire agreement with Lebanon last month has renewed hope that a ceasefire in Gaza could be on the horizon for many Palestinians.
