Elon Musk’s Auschwitz Visit: A Firsthand Account Raises Troubling Questions

In a candid and critical reflection, writer and Holocaust educator Julie Gray has shared her perspective on Elon Musk’s visit to Auschwitz, offering a troubling assessment of his demeanor during the experience. Gray, the life partner of Holocaust survivor Gidon Lev, accompanied Musk on the visit last year and now expresses regret over participating in what she describes as a “photo-op event.”

Gray’s recent social media post challenges the perception that Musk’s visit to the former concentration camp absolves him of accusations of antisemitism. “I see people posting that Elon was at Auschwitz this time last year – therefore his recent ‘gesture’ is not antisemitic. I was there too. Last year. With Elon,” she wrote, explaining her initial belief that the visit could bring meaningful attention to Holocaust remembrance. However, she now admits, “I am embarrassed that I have photos of this on my phone.”

According to Gray, Musk appeared indifferent and detached while touring the site, showing little emotional response to the atrocities documented within Auschwitz. “I spent hours with him and walked with him through Auschwitz. I stood with him, looking at the nauseating heaps of hair, luggage, and shoes flooded with violet light meant to preserve it,” she recalled.

She went on to offer a blunt assessment of Musk’s attitude:

“Is Musk an antisemite? People, actually, it’s worse – he doesn’t care whatsoever. Elon, father of ‘little X’ as he described his freezing cold son to me, literally does not care. He was unmoved by the experience.”

For Gidon Lev, whose father died on a Nazi death march, the visit was profoundly significant. However, Gray claims that Musk remained focused on his press entourage and personal image rather than the solemnity of the occasion. “For Gidon, to be in the place where his father, Ernst, died on a death march… was a huge deal. Elon did not care.”

Gray described how Musk posed for cameras and departed without acknowledging Lev’s personal connection to the site. “He was utterly detached. He cared about how he looked… This is Elon Musk. A sociopath if ever there was one,” she stated.

The revelations come amid ongoing criticism of Musk’s handling of antisemitic content on X (formerly Twitter). Under his leadership, many argue that hate speech and misinformation have flourished, raising questions about his commitment to combating antisemitism beyond symbolic gestures.

Julie Gray’s reflections serve as a stark reminder of the need for genuine engagement with history and the ethical responsibility of influential figures when addressing the past. As public figures increasingly shape historical narratives, her account challenges us to discern between sincere remembrance and superficial performance.
