Fetterman’s Gift Exchange with Netanyahu

Senator John Fetterman, D-Pennsylvania, and his wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, traveled to Israel this week to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This marks Fetterman’s second visit to Jerusalem since taking office in 2022.

Exchanging of Gifts

During their meeting, Fetterman presented Netanyahu with a framed news article about efforts to memorialize Netanyahu’s brother, Yoni Netanyahu, in Philadelphia. Yoni, an Israeli soldier, was killed during the 1976 Entebbe rescue mission.

In return, Netanyahu gifted Fetterman a silver-plated version of a pager model used in Israel’s September 2024 military operation. The operation, which involved sabotaging and detonating pagers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon, resulted in 42 deaths and over 4,000 injuries.

Referencing the device’s historical significance, Netanyahu remarked, “This is a silver-plated beeper. The real beeper is, like, one-tenth the weight. It’s nothing, but it changes history.”

Fetterman responded enthusiastically, saying, “When that story broke, I was like, ‘Oh, I love it, I love it.’ And now, it’s like, thank you for this.”

The beeper attack occurred just weeks before Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon and the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The conflict ended in a ceasefire in late November.

Fetterman’s Stance

While in Israel, Fetterman reaffirmed his strong support for the country. He posted on X, Hamas does not want peace. I unapologetically, 100% stand with Israel and demand the release of all remaining hostages.”

His visit came as Israeli forces resumed operations in the Gaza Strip following a two-month ceasefire.

In February, Fetterman made headlines for his response to former President Donald Trump’s statement that the U.S. should “take over the Gaza Strip.” While calling Trump’s remarks “provocative,” Fetterman suggested that Palestinian leadership had “refused or been unwilling to deliver a government that provided security and economic development for themselves.”

Financial Support

The trip to Israel isn’t unexpected as the senator has received significant financial support from Pro-Israel interest groups, raising questions about potential influences on his stance. According to Track AIPAC, he has received $347,710 in independent expenditures and campaign contributions. His financial ties to these groups have raised questions about the influence of such contributions on his policy positions.

Contradictions

Some have questioned how Fetterman’s wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, reconciles his pro-Israel stance with her own humanitarian and social justice advocacy. In Pittsburgh, she is known as an activist and humanitarian. She is a founder of the non-profit Freestore 15104 and a co-founder of the non-profits For Good PGH and 412 Food Rescue.

Senator Fetterman’s website describes his wife’s ambitions saying, “these as a focus on nutrition, food equity and meeting Pennsylvanians’ basic needs. With just an empty shipping container and an open lot, Gisele opened the Free Store, distributing household goods, baby items and bicycles to those in need. In addition, she co-founded 412 Food Rescue, which sends volunteers to retailers who have surplus food that risks going bad and delivers it to nonprofits that serve the hungry. Gisele also co-founded the nonprofit For Good PGH which drives numerous initiatives on inclusion including “Hello Hijab,” which produces miniature hijabs for dolls, promoting tolerance and diversity. Beyond founding and supporting multiple organizations, Gisele is an unapologetic advocate for marginalized groups, especially the immigrant community as she herself was once a Dreamer.”

Brazilian-born Barreto Fetterman was an undocumented immigrant at one point, who moved to the U.S. with her family at age 7. She got her green card in 2004 and became a U.S. citizen five years later.

Her humanitarian work, which centers on supporting marginalized communities, promoting diversity and advocating for immigrant rights, seems at odds with her husband’s staunch support for policies criticized for oppressing Palestinian communities.

Senator Fetterman’s visit to Israel, his unwavering support for the country and his financial backing from pro-Israel groups have reinforced his position as one of Israel’s staunchest allies in the U.S. Senate. However, his stance has also drawn scrutiny, particularly in light of his wife Gisele Barreto Fetterman’s advocacy for marginalized communities, immigrant rights and social justice causes. The contrast between their public positions raises broader questions about the intersection of politics, personal values, and humanitarian work. As tensions in the region continue to escalate, Fetterman’s alignment with Israel will likely remain a point of contention.
