Israel Breaks Ceasefire. Attacks Children and Civilians Again.

In a devastating escalation that has shattered hopes for peace, Israeli forces launched extensive airstrikes on Gaza on March 18, 2025, killing at least 232 Palestinians, including women and children. This attack — one of the deadliest since the fragile January truce — has drawn sharp condemnation for its ethical implications and blatant disregard for international law.

The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, justified the attacks by accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire. However, the reality paints a starkly different picture. Reports indicate that Israel has committed nearly 1,000 violations of the Gaza ceasefire agreement since its implementation, including military incursions, gunfire, airstrikes, intensified surveillance, and obstruction of humanitarian aid.

These repeated infractions have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis, where hospitals are overwhelmed, food and medical supplies are scarce, and civilians are bearing the brunt of political and military power struggles.

Netanyahu’s Justifications Do Not Hold Up

Netanyahu has framed the renewed offensive as an unavoidable act of national security, citing Hamas’s alleged violations of the truce. He argues that Hamas left Israel with no choice but to resume military operations to dismantle its infrastructure and deter future attacks.

However, this reasoning does not withstand scrutiny. Firstly, collective punishment of an entire population for the actions of a militant group is a clear war crime under international law. The wholesale destruction of homes, medical facilities, and basic infrastructure cannot be excused under the pretense of targeting Hamas.

The principle of proportionality, fundamental to the laws of war, dictates that military responses must not inflict excessive harm on civilians compared to the military advantage gained. Furthermore, if Israel’s true aim were the safe return of hostages, escalating violence only endangers them further, making a diplomatic solution far more viable.

Secondly, Netanyahu’s claim that Hamas broke the ceasefire is deeply hypocritical, given that Israel itself committed nearly 1,000 ceasefire violations, engaging in airstrikes, armed incursions, and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. Rather than being a reactionary move, Israel’s latest attack appears to be part of a broader strategy of dominance, ensuring that any temporary truce remains on its own terms while disregarding Palestinian lives and international law.

A Pattern of Truce Violations

The international community’s response has been mixed. While the White House has defended Israel’s actions, maintaining that Hamas bears responsibility for the resumption of hostilities, other nations and human rights organizations have strongly condemned the airstrikes. Calls for an immediate cessation of violence and accountability for war crimes are growing louder.

A Envoy Deposed – For Being Successful

In a development that has raised eyebrows among international observers, Adam Boehler, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, recently withdrew his nomination following direct negotiations with Hamas aimed at securing the release of American hostages. These unprecedented talks, which excluded Israeli participation, have been met with significant backlash from Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Boehler’s engagement with Hamas marked a notable departure from longstanding U.S. policy, which traditionally refrained from direct contact with the group due to its designation as a terrorist organization. The negotiations reportedly focused on extending the Gaza ceasefire and facilitating hostage-for-prisoner exchanges. However, these discussions were conducted without prior coordination with Israel, leading to tensions between the U.S. and Israeli governments.

The Israeli administration expressed strong disapproval of Boehler’s independent approach, perceiving it as a potential threat to their strategic interests. Some analysts suggest that Netanyahu’s government feared these negotiations might lead to a breakthrough in peace talks, potentially undermining Israel’s hardline stance against Hamas. This perspective aligns with Netanyahu’s historical preference for maintaining a strong and stable Hamas as a counterbalance to the more moderate Palestinian Authority, thereby justifying continued military actions in Gaza.

The controversy surrounding Boehler’s negotiations culminated in his decision to withdraw his nomination as the official envoy, although he continues to work on hostage issues in a different capacity. This move has been interpreted by some as a concession to Israeli pressure, reflecting the complex dynamics at play in U.S.-Israel relations and the broader Middle East peace process.

This incident underscores the devious and often contentious nature of Israeli politics in the region.

The Ethics of Collective Punishment

The targeting of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and refugee camps, further highlights the disregard for human life. The sheer scale of destruction and suffering inflicted upon Gaza’s population cannot be justified under any pretext of self-defense. If the goal was truly to secure the release of hostages, escalating violence only endangers them further, making a diplomatic solution a far more viable and humane approach.

Justice and Accountability

Israel’s repeated ceasefire violations and disproportionate military responses underscore the urgent need for renewed diplomatic efforts to achieve a sustainable and just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Without accountability and an unwavering commitment to upholding international law, the cycle of violence will continue, inflicting untold suffering on innocent civilians.
