Israeli Actress/Former IDF Receives Star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

On March 18, 2025, the Israeli actress and former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military member, Gal Gadot, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Celebrities are honored with a star on the California landmark for significant achievements in the entertainment industry. Known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe, Gadot is celebrated as a symbol of empowerment. However, her strong pro-Israel stance and military background have made her a polarizing figure, especially in light of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The ceremony itself faced brief interruptions from protests by both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups, illustrating the divided perceptions of Gadot’s public image.
Escalating Military Tensions
The ceremony, however, was overshadowed by Israel’s renewed military operations. While the ceremony was happening, Israel launched a series of airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas. The Israeli military reported targeting Hamas positions, while Palestinian health officials reported significant civilian casualties. The escalation has raised international concerns about the humanitarian impact and the potential for a broader conflict. In one night, more than 400 civilians, including nearly 200 children, were killed and over 500 injured.
According to the Middle East Eye, “In the dead of night, 100 warplanes rain fire on families huddled in makeshift shelters. With no ambulances, no hospitals, and no way to flee, the wounded are left to die.” But the war does not stop in Gaza.
As the conflict escalates, Gadot’s outspoken support for the IDF resurfaces in the public discourse.
In a social media post, she wrote: “I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens. Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children. We shall overcome!!! Shabbat Shalom!”
“On Oct. 7, Jewish women were sexually terrorized, raped, murdered, and kidnapped by Hamas. We were all listening, hoping to hear support from our sisters around the world and, too often, heard silence.” In particular the allegations of sexual violence by Hamas, were met with skepticism. Investigations by journalists, including CNN and Israeli reporter Oren Ziv, could not substantiate these claims.’
Gadot’s supporters believe she is a proud advocate for Israel’s right to security; she is a source of pride, a symbol of resilience amid ongoing struggles. Critics, however, argue that her views dismiss the complex experiences and suffering of Palestinians. For them, Gadot represents a painful reminder of Palestinian suffering, especially in a region often described as the world’s largest open-air prison, home to over 2.1 million people living under harsh restrictions.
IDF Service and Public Persona
Gadot, a self-proclaimed Zionist, served two years in the IDF, which is mandatory for most Israeli citizens. She has consistently expressed pride in her military service and has used her platform to address issues like antisemitism. During a speech at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on March 4, 2025, Gadot shared her family’s history and her perspective on the rise of global antisemitism.
“My name is Gal, and I’m Jewish, and we have had enough of Jew-hatred. On Oct. 7, Jewish women were sexually terrorized, raped, murdered, and kidnapped by Hamas. We were all listening, hoping to hear support from our sisters around the world, and, too often, heard silence. We can’t wait any longer; we can’t hold our breath and pray or beg for support from people, groups, communities that don’t want to be there for us. We need to be there for ourselves.”
“I’m a grandchild of a Holocaust survivor who came to Israel and built a family from nothing after his entire family was erased in Auschwitz. On my mother’s side, I’m an eighth-generation Israeli. None of us can ignore the explosion of Jew hatred around us.”
Her remarks came in response to global pro-Palestine protests perceived as anti-Israel.
Allegations and Disinformation
Reports of atrocities like beheaded babies quickly spread but were later found to be unfounded and false.
• CNN found no evidence of decapitated children.
• French journalists reported no accounts of such violence from locals.
• TImes noted that misinformation from Israeli officials hindered investigations.
• A UN report stated that Israeli authorities failed to provide evidence for the allegations.
Additionally, The Intercept revealed that Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs funded media operations using AI tools and collaborated with the Tel Aviv-based political marketing firm Stoic to spread unverified claims.
The Debate Over Recognition
People praise Gadot as a groundbreaking female superhero, while others criticize her performances as lacking emotional depth, attributing her success to effective marketing rather than to talent.
Gadot’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame symbolizes the complex intersection of fame, politics, and international conflict. As debates continue, people question whether a celebrity with strong political views can truly separate their art from their beliefs. She remains a focal point for discussions about celebrity influence and Israeli nationalism.
According to The Guardian, critics argue that casting someone with a background in the IDF as a global icon of peace is inappropriate, suggesting that it inadvertently validates militaristic and oppressive policies. Gadot’s casting as Wonder Woman, a global symbol of justice, has drawn criticism from those who see her military background as conflicting with the character’s ideals. Supporters argue her professional success should be judged separately from her political views.
